Cultural Mediator & Research Team Training: Capacity building for Inclusive Data Collection Across EQUICARES Pilot Sites
In October 2025, EQUICARES partner Jigsaw delivered a targeted training programme for cultural mediators and research teams, building capacity for ethical, inclusive, and culturally sensitive data collection across EQICARES’ pilot sites.
The session equipped participants with practical tools and shared standards for engaging vulnerable groups, focusing on: Data Collection Protocols: Including detailed steps for structured surveys, translation procedures, participant ID assignment, and uploading de-identified data to Typeform.
Methodology for Reflective Diaries & Mobile Ethnography: A walkthrough of the three data collection routes (mobile ethnography, manual transcription, and manual translation), selection criteria based on digital literacy levels, and practical guidance on ensuring high-quality narrative data.
Sensitive and Trauma-Informed Interviewing: An in-depth session on the RALRR protocol (Recognise–Ask–Listen–Respond–Refer), strengthening the capacity of cultural mediators and researchers to safely manage distress, build trust, and conduct empathetic conversations with participants.
Safety and Risk Response Procedures: Training on the RALRR (Recognise–Ask–Listen–Respond–Refer) protocol to support safe, empathetic engagement.
Why This Training Matters
Engaging with people in vulnerable situations requires more than methodological knowledge, it demands cultural humility, ethical sensitivity, and a unified approach across countries. By investing in the skills of cultural mediators and researchers, EQUICARES ensures that:
-
data is collected respectfully and reliably,
-
participant well-being is prioritised, and
-
insights reflect the diverse realities of communities across Europe.
